Profile

My name is Mila Knickerbocker, and I am a fourth-year Computer Science major at UCFIn 2023, I graduated from Howard W. Blake High School in Tampa, Florida. One of my favorite classes at UCF has been Physics II. The course challenged me to think critically, and my professor made complex concepts much more approachable, which helped me develop a deeper appreciation for physics. Another standout experience has been learning from Professor Kyle Denker, who taught several of my introductory computer science courses. His ability to clearly explain foundational concepts gave me the confidence and skills I needed to succeed in more advanced courses. I decided to get involved with the GEMS program because I was looking for both direction and a sense of community in what initially felt like a very large and unfamiliar environment. Through GEMS, I was able to build meaningful connections with other STEM students who understand both the challenges and rewards of this path. My expectation as a mentor is to help mentees find that same sense of belonging while also supporting them academically and personally as they navigate their first year. For incoming students, my biggest piece of advice is to step outside of your comfort zone. It can be intimidating at first, but getting involved and attending events is one of the best ways to meet people and grow your confidence. There is always someone you can relate to, and you may surprise yourself with how quickly you find your place. In my free time, I enjoy rowing, crocheting, running, weightlifting, and playing the tenor recorder.
