Hi there! My name is Macy Comm, and I am an Industrial Engineering major with a minor in International Engineering. This is my fourth year at UCF, and I have loved every moment of it! I graduated from Jensen Beach High School in Jensen Beach, Florida. One of my favorite courses I have taken was Engineering Surveying and Health & Safety. I took this course while I studied abroad, and it was such a cool experience. We had multiple outdoor sessions where we learned how to use laser scanners and telescopes to measure height differences, angles, and other items around campus. During those sessions, we were all required to dress in appropriate personal protective equipment like hard hats and high visibility jackets. At UCF, I have really enjoyed Theatre Survey where I got to watch and analyze stage performances and plays. Some of my favorite professors at UCF are Dr. Mikusinski for Calculus I and Jorge Sarmiento for Systems Simulations. Both teachers are really understanding and make class worthwhile and enjoyable. I love the EXCEL and GEMS programs because they make our huge school feel a little bit smaller. There is a certain comfort level that comes with seeing the same faces in all or most of your classes, even if you aren’t friends with those people. Your TAs, LAs, and mentors are also amazing resources, and they genuinely care about your progress and success your courses. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my Alpha Sigma Kappa sorority sisters, going line dancing, and hammocking at Memory Mall.

Words of Advice for incoming EXCEL/GEMS students: Go to office hours! You’d be surprised how many points you can get back on assignments and exams just by talking to your teacher about it. Your teachers are also more likely to help you out at the end of the semester if you have built a relationship with them and you never know when you’ll need a letter of recommendation either!
