Profile

My name is Leilani Jones and I am a third-year student majoring in Photonic Science and Engineering at the University of Central Florida. I am especially interested in how light-based technology can be used in healthcare, and I hope to pursue a career in biomedical technology focused on improving treatments for chronic kidney disease. At UCF, I have developed skills in Arduino, MATLAB, Python, C, and C++. I enjoy the challenge of applying what I learn to real world problems. What I like most about my major is how it pushes me to think differently and connect concepts across different areas. It is challenging, but it is also what makes it rewarding. I decided to get involved with GEMS because I understand how important it is to have a strong support system, especially in a STEM major. Being surrounded by people who motivate and uplift you can make a big difference in your college experience. As a mentor, I want to be someone others feel comfortable going to, whether they need help, advice, or just someone to listen. I also hope to continue growing both academically and personally through this experience. For incoming students, my advice is to give yourself grace and stay consistent. You do not have to have everything figured out right away. Ask questions, take advantage of resources, and do not be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. That is where growth really happens. Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my friends, listening to music, and going bowling. It is one of my favorite ways to relax and recharge.
