Hi everyone! I’m Cora Patterson, and I’m a sophomore Computer Science major. I graduated from high school in Montana. My favorite classes at UCF are my programming classes. I love coming up with solutions to unique and challenging problems using code! My favorite professor is Dr. Szumlanski, who has taught my Honors Introduction to Programming with C, Object-Oriented Programming, and Honors Computer Science 1 classes. He makes his lectures fun and engaging, and he cares deeply for the success of his students. I became involved in the GEMS Program because it sounded like a great way to meet fellow women in STEM and make connections with people in my classes, and I was right! GEMS and EXCEL have been so rewarding, and they’re how I’ve made many of my closest friends. It’s a supportive environment to grow and learn alongside your peers, and I love that I can always ask questions in the EXCEL Center. To all the incoming freshmen, you can do this! Transitioning into college brings countless big changes, but with determination and friends by your side, you’ll do amazing things here. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try something new! Outside of school, I love visiting the Disney parks, going to the beach, reading (especially science fiction), and spending time with family and friends. Go Knights!
