My name is Amy Lai and I am currently a Junior and Mechanical Engineering Major at UCF. I am originally from California but moved to Florida when I was little. I attended Pinellas Park High School where I was Editor n Chief of the yearbook committee, Senior class President, and joined Mu Alpha Theta, Rho Kappa, Science Honor Society, National Honor Society, and the Art Honor Society. While at UCF, thanks to the rock wall at the gym, I have gained an interest in Rock Climbing and am currently belay certified. One of my favorite classes here at UCF is Calculus I with John Hausermann. The class was very small and I felt like I really got to know my classmates and my Graduate Assistant who was also my professor. Although the class was a little difficult it was still fun and a good class to start college with. But my favorite professor would be Dr. Justin Karl who teaches American History, he is very understanding and is hilarious. I am involved in Dr. Seetha Raghaven's research lab where we study the stress in alumina nano particles. This is my second year with GEMS and I decided to join the program in hopes to help create a support system for the incoming class of freshmen. My expectation from my mentees are that they become engaged in the program and utilize the resources that the program offers. Words of advice for the GEMS freshman students: Never, ever, ever, forget your dreams. You can do absolutely anything you set your mind to!
